While the new Lincoln Navigator’s retro luxury style is making waves, let’s take a look back at how they were doing it 15 years ago.
I loved it then and still love it now.

Blackwood or GTFO.

I actually saw a Blackwood in quite good condition the other day. I kinda want to see a modern one because that seems like the kind of truck I want.

That interior is actually shocking nice-looking. Probably really a plasticky nightmare to actually be in though. Maybe I’m just a sucker for white leather, as pesky as it can be if you actually drive your car.

The Blackwood was a first generation Navigator with a bed, so basically it was a rebadged Expedition with some extra wood.

‘Twas a fancified F-150. I still can’t believe Lincoln managed to make the ‘97-’04 F-150 interior look decent.

Lincoln had an idea where to go 15 years ago with a decent line up like the e39 copied LS and even the Aviator but Ford did let anything come of it. Where as 15 years ago GM was open to trying new things with Cadillac and while they are in a small slump right now, Cadillac has the most impressive line of any domestic luxury. Even if they are blind enough to not make s Flagship sedan

I like the look of that one better. The new one is a bit overwrought.

I remember reading an article—maybe in Car and Driver—about the Aviator that read something like “the cash cow is back in the barn.” I was shocked when the Aviator failed... it remains one of my favorite vehicles and I always enjoy seeing good condition survivors.
I hope he new Aviator is a worthwhile effort.

What’s shocking is how the Mountaineer sold better than the Aviator.
But in both cases, a top trim Explorer could nearly match them both. Same issue with Honda and Acura, but they seem to be getting better at differentiation.

Awesome post, puts into perspective how far the new Navigator has come.

I remember reading an article about all the engineering that went into the Aviator to make it more than just a leather Explorer but because it didn’t look different enough, it failed because all people thought was that it was a leather Explorer.
It looks like Lincoln has done a better job of rectifying that problem recently, the new Aviator should be a great success.

The way Lincoln is going, I’d love to see a new Blackwood as well. It would be an extremely handsome vehicle

They could just take the raptor and dress it up. How hard can it be?
